Hello bellydancers,
We're putting on an annual bellydance variety show as part of the Malmesbury Carnival on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of August.
The theme this year is Masquerade Ball with element of time and space travel, so that anything at all could be fitted in.
Would anyone be interested in participating? ;)
It's a variety show - so the more variety the better!

8:49PM - Amatuer Male Belly Dancer: Boos Shoof

This is an improvised baladi, but after much rehearsing on two count foot work, pops and locks, and getting to get to know the musics subtleties, i love this song, and loved improvising a baladi to it...

2:44PM - An Inquiry upon the styles of Oriental Dance???

I've recently become interested in Oriental dance and have been learning from Neena and Veenas "Discover Bellydance" boxset. Now I was under the impression they were teaching the steps and moves of the Egyptian Style, but I've been told their style is that of "Cabaret", which is I assume, a relatively recent style, but what are the Cabaret style influences?

Has anyone watched Neena and Veena, and what style they practice?

I was mistaken that gypsy was tribal, which I was educated was not the case?

I am getting increasingly confused now...! <:S Does anyone who is versed in the traditional styles of bellydance know of any links to websites and/or videos et cetera that can clearly define the different traditional styles and their origins/history, such as gypsy, tribal, et cetera. As I'm getting into oriental dance I'd like to educate myself from more reliable sources! Many thanks to any of you who care to comment, it will be appreciated, also has anyone any knowledge of good DVD's that teach Tribal Belly dance as I'm starting to really like this style too.

3:30PM - Still need help!!!

Hi ladies,
We still need your help!

We've got an emergency.
We're putting on an annual belly dance show as part of town's carnival, and this year we've decided to try something different and incorporate the dances into a play.
Problem is two of the dancers seem to have dropped off the face of the earth and we can't get hold of them! They were scripted to do a pirate belly dance.

Would anyone be available on Monday 24th of August, 7-9pm to fill in and do a pirate dance?!?!

The show is in Malmesbury, Wiltshire (SN16), just north of M4 junction 17.

Performance is indoors, in the Malmesbury Town Hall. Parking is not an issue - the main car park is right outside the hall.
Skill level is not really important - most of us are beginners, some are more intermediate level.
I have the music (the track is about 3.5 mins long), or you can bring your own; we can help you to write the dance or you can write your own - doesn't matter as long as it's piratey!

We're only a small group and all of our girls are already doing other dances either before or after this pirate dance, so a costume change would be impossible :(

Can anyone HELP PLEASE?!

Thanks in advance
x

6:30PM - Hipnotic - Reading, UK

Hipnotic is a new type of bellydance event for this area!

Hosted by local bellydance troupe, Covert Bling at at the Madejski Stadium’s Jazz Cafe, Hipnotic aims to reach out to the wider community, to bring performances and an opportunity to join in, to people familiar with Middle Eastern dance, and most importantly, those who are not!

If you have ever wanted to learn bellydance, but have not had the opportunity to attend a class, the night offers you the opportunity to try an introductory class. If you’ve been dancing for a while but want to try some different styles or combinations, there will be an opportunity for that too. Interspersed with this will be performances from local performers, and an opportunity for you to try out your new moves, or just relax at the bar and soak up the atmosphere instead!

Easily accessible from the M4 (junction 11) with a large car park, the Jazz Café is a new type of venue for bellydance in this area. We are very excited to be able to bring you events in a space with ambiance, and a bar!

The first Hipnotic is on 19th July from 7.30pm. Entry is £7 per person. This night will be a regular bimonthly event. The focus of the first will be on local troupes.

10.30 - 1pm - Improvisational Masterclass: Fun with Formations and Floorwork
Fun twists layered onto the ATS format that will add some exciting dynamics to an improvised performance.

All-new combos taught for the first time, some of which will utilise the material covered in Workshop 1.  Back-to-back classes on powerful sword, upbeat skirt, and meditative candle is guaranteed to invoke the tribal magic in you. As always, the technique of every move will be broken down and drilled, and every combo is cued for improvised performance.

6.30pm onwards -  Free Dance/Mini-showbacks
Put on your costume, try out the moves you've learnt in the day, show us some of your own, or just dance away with your friends loving the whole tribal connection. :)

BellyNut Tribal bazaar will be available throughout the day during breaks, and during the evening.  Tea and coffee from the start to the finish of the workshops and an organic, vegan lunch is included in the price.  Bring your own drinks/snacks for during the mini-hafla.

All workshops are open level and, other than the skirt, shouldn't be any more aerobically demanding than one of my classes (there are a lot of hours to be dancing in there!).

Strictly limited to 18 places.
Book by 31st March for a discounted price of £45 for the whole day. Payment via paypal or cheque in advance.

To book your space, your performance, or to ask any questions, please give me a call: 07788 925074, leave a message, and I'll call you back.

Many thanks,
Nicola

3:04PM - E-petition to allow Bellydancers access to swords in the UK

I know they're not always effective but it's worth a try. In addition to the call to contact the home office (Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk) to get them to add Bellydancers to the list of occupations with exception from the Violent Crimes Bill, the following petition has been set up:

9:02AM - Tribal Bellydance in London?

Hello all,
I'm new to bellydance and would really love to start taking some classes. I'm particularly interested in tribal bellydance - but, is this a type of bellydance you have to approach with previous bellydance experience or can a total newbie begin here? On that note, does anyone know of a good (non-intimidating) class for beginners in the London area? (I'm in N.London).
Thank you for your help!
